Technical innovation and efficiency: a Q&A with STOFIX Group’s Technical Director, Andy McKechnie

November 12th, 2024

STOFIX Group Technical Director Andy McKechnie explains how in 2024, the business has made significant strides in both technical advancements and operational efficiency.

Can you tell us about the unique design and scheduling service STOFIX provides?

STOFIX is the only company in our industry that fully designs and schedules our brick slip façade system. We have a dedicated team of over 15 designers who take on all design responsibility, ensuring each system is crafted to meet our client’s exact needs. Unlike other products that often require on-site modifications, our pre-pointed panels simplify installation and reduce time significantly. Plus, our lightweight system – at just 37 kg per square metre – cuts down on structural support requirements, streamlining the entire build process.

How has STOFIX’s focus on efficiency and innovation impacted its growth?

Over the past year, our focus on efficiency and innovation has helped boost our factory output by 20%. In the UK market alone, we’ve seen a 30% increase in production, going from 36k m² in 2023 to 52k m² in 2024.

What steps has STOFIX taken to ensure quality control and reduce waste?

Our CADflow system, developed in-house, has been a major step forward in quality control and waste reduction. CADflow automates the scheduling process, cutting errors by 97% and reducing waste by 65%. What was once a manual process, is now fully streamlined, allowing us to maintain high-quality control standards throughout production.

Could you share more about STOFIX’s recent fire testing accreditation?

Our renewal of the BS 13501 fire testing accreditation this year was a significant achievement. Our product earned an A2, S1, d0 rating following rigorous front-and-back testing. Unlike standard testing procedures, testing from both sides isn’t always required, but we prioritise these higher safety standards to ensure the best for our clients.

How is STOFIX supporting partners through technical services?

We’re set to launch the STOFIX Technical Services Centre, headed by Richard Bell, Head of Technical for Stofix UK. This new facility will provide our partners with enhanced technical support, strengthening our collaborations and ensuring ongoing project success.

What are STOFIX’s growth goals for the next year?

Our growth focus is on sustainable expansion. We’re aiming to increase UK market production to 60-65k m² and strategically expand into more European markets. To support this, we’ll be enhancing our factory’s capacity to meet demand, maintaining our commitment to quality and innovation.

How has your role and team structure evolved over the past year?

In July 2023, I took on the role of statutory director of Stofix Poland, gaining oversight of factory operations. With the support of group Operations Director Alex Porter and Plant Manager Karol Bzdawka, we’ve improved factory efficiency, consistently delivering high-quality products. I’m also supported by STOFIX Group Board Chairman Michael Hardy and Managing Director Krister Sigfrids, whose guidance is invaluable as we continue to grow.
